A Homily Submission

.
Carson Weber, the guy who did The Bible Study I Can't Recommend Strongly Enough, wrote in with the following e-mail:

You may be interested in posting my pastor's homilies on Sonitus Sanctus. He's a dynamic, young priest who pulls no punches in his preaching and is on fire!

Here's the link.

God bless,
Carson

If it's got Carson's recommendation, I'd buy stock in it. Thanks, Carson!

Templars Ridiculousness...

Apparently NBC is airing some lame-brained miniseries which attempts to retell some part of Church history. So strange -- it's not even Easter yet. I tell ya' -- no matter how dumb, there are people who will believe anything. I blame the public schools. ;0)

In any case, come give a listen to Carl Olsen and Sandra Miesel bust it up:

The Templars: The Mini-Series, The Myths, and the Truth | Sandra Miesel and Carl E. Olson | Ignatius Insight Podcast | January 25, 2009

Carl E. Olson, editor of Ignatius Insight, talks to Sandra Miesel, a medieval historian and co-author of The Da Vinc Hoax and Pied Piper of Atheism, about the NBC mini-series, "The Last Templar".

The mini-series, which airs Sunday, January 25th, and Monday, January 26th, is based on the 2005 novel, The Last Templar, written by Raymond Khoury. The novel was on The New York Times bestseller list for 22 months and sold over four million copies.

The novel is similar in many ways to The Da Vinci Code, including its use of the Templars, its reliance on the "Gnostic gospels," and its claim that ancient documents provide definitive proof that Jesus Christ was not divine. USA Today, for example, writes of the mini-series, "The last time you saw this template, it was called The Da Vinci Code."

The novel, according to its website, is "a thought-provoking exploration of religion in today's world, and of historic fact versus faith, particularly regarding the origins of the Catholic Church. Through the investigation into the Templars' history and their mysterious discovery, and though the interplay between Tess - the agnostic, scientific skeptic - and Reilly, who turned to the Church after his father shot himself when Reilly was just a boy, the book presents a spirited look at the early days of the Church and invites the reader to question matters which most of us take at face value."

Carl and Sandra examine some of historical claims of the novel and discuss the ongoing popularity of the Templar mythology.

I don't know anything about her, but since I found her on the Semper Vita blog I'm positive she'll be top-notch (since the blog offers little else). Also speaking at the conference was Fr. Fessio - so that's another big assurance it will be worth listening to. Here are some links from an Australian student conference:

Two Questionable Audio Archives...

Two readers (thanks Dominic and Chris!) sent in links to audio archives - both with variously questionable content. The first is from Boston College and includes some talks by "Voice of the Faithful" (read: Heretical Horribles) folks, among other speakers of varying levels of orthodoxy. The second archive has talks by Protestants (and maybe some Catholics?) about religion, secular culture, public policy and science.

Make of them what you will, but they're expansive and here they are:

Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa

Kate from Holy Innocents parish in the UK was kind enough to point me to Fr. Cantalamessa's talks - thanks much!

It's help like this which lets me continue to post even when I'm short on time. Since I expect to be short on time quite a bit in the near future, I'd encourage any and all of you who find free MP3s in your browsing to shoot me a quick e-mail and share them with the rest of the class.

In any case, do enjoy!

Raniero Cantalamessa is a Franciscan Capuchin Catholic Priest. Born in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, 22 July 1934, ordained priest in 1958. Divinity Doctor and Doctor in classical literature. Former Ordinary Professor of History of Ancient Christianity and Director of the Department of religious sciences at the Catholic University of Milan. Member of the International Theological Commission (1975-1981).

In 1979 he resigned his teaching position to become a full time preacher of the Gospel. In 1980 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II Preacher to the Papal Household in which capacity he still serves, preaching a weekly sermon in Advent and Lent in the presence of the Pope, the cardinals, bishops an prelates of the Roman Curia and the general superiors of religious orders. He is frequently invited to speak at international and ecumenical conferences and rallies. [More...]

Reader Darren writes in:

Thought you'd be interested in some talks by philosopher and advisor to the Pontifical Council for Culture John Haldane that I came across via a Google search.

http://www.abc.net.au/sundaynights/stories/s2302457.htm - An interview on Australian radio focussing on Haldane's analytical Thomism viz a viz postmodern perspectives. Includes a lovely choir piece by Thomas Tallis.

http://www.catholica.com.au/forum/forum_entry.php?id=14042 - A debate on Australian radio on whether morality can exist without God.

[UPDATE: direct download]

http://www.christianworldviewconference.org/audio/2007conference/ - Poor quality audio of presentations by Haldane and others (eg. Philip Jenkins & Fr. Richard John Neuhaus) at a conference on the Christian Worldview and the Academy.

I am interested - thanx much.

The Six Deadly Sins?

I don't know who these folks are, but I stumbled on a site hosting their talks so I decided to post them. It's a gamble, but we'll see if it pays off. In any case, I couldn't find the seventh deadly sin (Envy, btw) in their talks but I was able to find the other six. If they turn out to be any good, I'll post some more -- of course, you could always just beat me there and just get them yourself if you're impatient. Heh.

UPDATE: Apparently these priests are SSPX schismatics. Just so ya' know.

UPDADED UPDATE: The SSPX bishops are no longer formally excommunicated...they're just not in full communion yet.

Without further ado, here they are:

Catholicy Comics

There's a site out there, Treasure Chest of Fun & Fact, which has collected scans of old Catholic-y comics from last century. They're pretty kewl, in a POD (piously over devotional) sort of way. If you have kids (or nieces / nephews or godchildren) who you have trouble articulating the truths of the faith to, you might just give the site a browse -- the archive is voluminous.

Here's an interview (WMA format) with an artist illustrator of said comics:

Listen to the Interview with Frank M. Borth
[Read the Transcription]

For an example, you might try the following Comic about God and creation from 1956. It talks about how the earth came to be from a scientific perspective, discusses how this doesn't contradict Church teaching, and closes with the line, "...Remembering how things were made isn't half as important as remembering who made them."

Jesus of Nazareth Series

I believe the following program was launched on Catholic Radio shortly after the Holy Father's book of the same title came out. If you've already listened to Jesus of Nazareth (tagged under audiobook and SPEAKER: The Pope), you might give the following a listen to help identify some of the finer points you may have missed the first time through:
