A Homily Submission
Carson Weber, the guy who did The Bible Study I Can't Recommend Strongly Enough, wrote in with the following e-mail:
You may be interested in posting my pastor's homilies on Sonitus Sanctus. He's a dynamic, young priest who pulls no punches in his preaching and is on fire!
Here's the link.
God bless,
Carson
If it's got Carson's recommendation, I'd buy stock in it. Thanks, Carson!

New blog/podcast - Reformation meets Rome
I wanted to offer a new podcast as a suggestion for links. The website is www.calledtocommunion.com and it features 10 Catholic Contributors who were formerly Reformed Protestants (PCA or OPC). The website also has a podcast that will be on various topics. Thanks, Tim!The first one was a conversion story interview of Dr. Jonathan Deane:
The second one is on the topic of Christian Unity featuring Bryan Cross (philosophy prof at St. Louis University) and Tom Riello, a former PCA pastor.
Also, our Podcast feed is: http://feeds2.feedburner.com/CalledToCommunionMedia
In Christ,
I tell ya', folks, if the quality of the podcast is even half that of the website, we're in for a real treat.

Templars Ridiculousness...

In any case, come give a listen to Carl Olsen and Sandra Miesel bust it up:
The Templars: The Mini-Series, The Myths, and the Truth | Sandra Miesel and Carl E. Olson | Ignatius Insight Podcast | January 25, 2009
Carl E. Olson, editor of Ignatius Insight, talks to Sandra Miesel, a medieval historian and co-author of The Da Vinc Hoax and Pied Piper of Atheism, about the NBC mini-series, "The Last Templar".
The mini-series, which airs Sunday, January 25th, and Monday, January 26th, is based on the 2005 novel, The Last Templar, written by Raymond Khoury. The novel was on The New York Times bestseller list for 22 months and sold over four million copies.
The novel is similar in many ways to The Da Vinci Code, including its use of the Templars, its reliance on the "Gnostic gospels," and its claim that ancient documents provide definitive proof that Jesus Christ was not divine. USA Today, for example, writes of the mini-series, "The last time you saw this template, it was called The Da Vinci Code."
The novel, according to its website, is "a thought-provoking exploration of religion in today's world, and of historic fact versus faith, particularly regarding the origins of the Catholic Church. Through the investigation into the Templars' history and their mysterious discovery, and though the interplay between Tess - the agnostic, scientific skeptic - and Reilly, who turned to the Church after his father shot himself when Reilly was just a boy, the book presents a spirited look at the early days of the Church and invites the reader to question matters which most of us take at face value."
Carl and Sandra examine some of historical claims of the novel and discuss the ongoing popularity of the Templar mythology.

Pat Madrid - Why Be Catholic?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So...several years ago I started straggling back to the faith I always held (but never knew). A pivotal part of that path was attending a Fullness of Truth conference in Corpus Christi, TX. At the conference I was blessed to hear Fr. Corapi, Fr. Pacwa, Doug Barry and several others speak passionately and forthrightly about the faith.
Wonderfully, the conferences are still being held. If you get a chance -- GO!
All that's to say this: Pat Madrid spoke at one and gave the following lecture entitled "Why Be Catholic when You can be Anything Else?" Now the Fullness of Truth folks have put the talk on their new podcast.
Welcome to the first episode of the Fullness of Truth podcast. In this episode we share a little bit of the mission of Fullness of Truth in a talk given by Patrick Madrid called Why Be Catholic When you can be anything else.

Lots O' Audio
UPDATED UPDATE: Audio Sancto chimed in and put the matter to rest -- it's all good. Also, Audio Sancto pointed to the linking terms of use, which include the following provision (FYI):
- If you can, please say three Hail Mary's for the priests who preach these sermons, and ask others to do the same
A few people have written in recently and pointed me to the Audio Sancto Sermon Series. Since there's really some great stuff there, I've been meaning to do a series of several posts where I break down the talks by topic. Unfortunately, I just can't seem to find the time. Rather than keep holding on to these gems, I figured I'd just share the link. To give you an idea of what's there, here are the links from the front page:

Morning Prayer & Invitatory

Fr. Chris - Young Priest Alert...
Father Chris acts as a simple catechist and gives a basic easy to understand background on the bible in the line of catholic tradition. Father Chris does not include heavy theology but he gives the reader a grasp on the bible by talking about the truth of the bible, the bible as necessary for salvation and the origins of the bible, he also gives sensible tips on someone beginning to read the bible.
Longer bio:
Father Walsh is the 5th of 6 children born to John and Joan (Ramsey) Walsh. He worshipped and attended elementary school at St. Joseph Church, Downingtown. He graduated from Bishop Shanahan High School in West Chester in 1987. He studied at Temple University and received a B.A. in Sociology in 1991.< style=""> There he supervised a program for conduct disordered adolescent males and served on their Behavior Management Team. During this time he was actively involved with Youth Ministry at St. Joseph Church in Downingtown.
He entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in September of 1993 to begin studies for the Roman Catholic Priesthood. Throughout his years in the seminary he had a wide variety of pastoral internship experiences that included inner city and suburban parishes, an urban high school, a hospital chaplaincy, a residence for the physically disabled and extensive work with the Missionaries of Charity in the South Bronx of New York City. Father Chris was ordained by Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua on May 15, 1999.
Our Lady of Ransom Parish in Northeast Philadelphia was Father’s first parochial assignment. During his 5 years he worked extensively to develop the liturgical and devotional life of the parish. In addition, he devoted a great deal of time to Adult Faith Formation, seeking to implement the vision of the U.S. Bishops in their document Were not our Hearts Burning within Us. In June of 2004 Justin Cardinal Rigali assigned Father Walsh to serve as School Minister of Archbishop Wood Catholic High School and in June of 2008 named him the 8th Pastor of St. Raymond of Penafort Parish in the Northwest section of Philadelphia.Father Chris’ experience with retreats began early in his priesthood. In addition to a variety of days of recollection and weekend retreats at the parish level and regional level, Father has preached retreats to the IHM Sisters and the Missionaries of Charity throughout the Northeast of the United States. He received training in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola at the Jesuit Center at Wernerville
Get the first podcast on the brand-new blog here.
BTW, if any of you do website design, their parish website is in a bad way and I'm pretty sure they'd appreciate the support.

Wesley J. Smith -- Bioethics Podcast
That said...I haven't disagreed with him about a bioethics issue yet. Perhaps there's something out there he's blindingly wrong about, but I haven't seen it. After a few years of pseudo-regularly reading him, everything he advocates appears to be in alignment with Church teaching.
SO...here's the skinny:
I am back in the podcast business, renamed from Brave New Bioethics to What It Means to be Human. After consulting with my colleagues at the Discovery Institute--which is producing the broadcast--we decided that since I am dealing with issues well beyond bioethics now, the new title was warranted.
In the first edition, I define some of the threats to human exceptionalism and argue that accepting the intrinsic value of human life simply because it is human is the necessary intellectual condition precedent (as we lawyers say) to universal human rights.
Check it out.

Escuchan, Hermanos...

Scott Hahn Interviewed About His New Book
Fortunately, Chris Cash (the host of the Catholic Spotlight) came to the rescue. He writes:
Oh, in case you don't know, Dr. Hahn's (and Dr. Wiker's (Bio)) new book is called "Answering the New Atheism: Dismantling Dawkins' Case Against God". You can read excerpts from it here at Amazon."[Benjamin Wiker's interview] is an interview with his co-author about his latest book. Scott did not want to do the interview himself, he said that Ben was much more knowledgeable on the topic than he was and he has 3 deadlines he was trying to meet. I will let you know when I get him on again. I did have an interview with Kimberly that will post on monday at CatholicSpotlight.com, if you are at all interested in her new book, Graced and Gifted."
But if you're only planning on listening, here's a direct link to the Catholic Spotlight interview of co-author Dr. Benjamin Wiker. If you like what you hear, please vote for them at Podcast Alley - and feel free to vote every month to help them get their show in front of more people.
UPDATE: here's a link to Dr. Wiker's website - just FYI. Thanks to his site, I'm glad to give you the Emmaus Road Publishing's three part interview of Dr. Hahn (for reals this time!) and Dr. Wiker via YouTube. If you would like to convert the YouTube to .mp3 to listen on your way to work or whatever it is you do, here's a program for download which will do it quickly and easily (which is what I use) or a website which will do the same.

New and Allegedly Excellent Homilist
I thought I'd give a heads-up to some more nuggets of gold that you may want to share with the rest of your fan/web-base. Fr. Mike Schmitz is a young, rock-solid, zealous, and hilariously relevant priest from the Diocese of Duluth in Minnesota. He is currently the chaplain at the University of Minnesota Duluth where his homilies have been recorded and put online. Being a young priest himself, and with a college-age audience, he preaches with a flavor and spunk that probably reaches the young adult crowd best, while still being worthwhile hearing for 25+ers. I have used his podcasted homilies in my classroom and my students have LOVED him. He preaches the truths of the faith (completely orthodox) and brings almost every homily around to Jesus in the Eucharist.
One statement of Fr. Mike's from an earlier entry got me hooked. Here it is:
"Peter starts walking on water. Even when he fails, even when he falls, and brothers and sisters we know this, we get called out of the boat. You’re going to do some amazing things in the power of Christ, but are you going to fail? Are we going to sin? ABSOLUTELY! What happens? Peter starts to sink, so what does Jesus do? He descends, He grabs him, catches him, and raises
him back up, because that's what Christ does. He descends in order to raise us up."
